Is Beauty the Eye of Beholder?
59Is beauty the eye of the beholder as said in so many ways? Or is it what the public would like you to believe? Does the public influence how we feel about ourselves because of their concept of what beauty is?
I think the answers to all of these questions are yes in their own way. I believe that what I think is beautiful like my daughter’s smile, my son’s freckles, the leaves as they turn to a nice shade of mauve, the sunrise, the water cresting on the ocean, even the voice of the bird that sits on the fence first thing in the morning. My husband would tell you that he can’t stand that bird. Not because it’s not beautiful but because it sets off our dogs ever single morning when they go out the door.
It is, also, the public or maybe just the media. It is all the fakeness that they are have always presented the public with. If one of the most beautiful woman in the world, Julia Roberts, has to be airbrushed in advertisements than what does that say about the common day woman who doesn’t have the perfect hairdresser, nail stylist or makeup artist. Are they not beautiful the moment that they wake up in their natural state? Men have been known to say that they think that woman is most beautiful when she is waking or when a child is sleeping. Is the child simply beautiful because it is finally behaving or not talking excessively?
Today as a society, we have many people that have low self-esteem because they do not accept themselves for who they are. But aren’t most people beautiful in their own right? I think that the media has made it harder to accept who we are as individual. Personally I don’t think it’s healthy to look like a tooth picked walking down the aisle or to be so malnutrition that you end up in the hospital like my daughter’s idol, Selena Gomez.
According to the 2009 Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System (PedNSS) data, nearly one-third of the 3.7 million low-income children aged two to four years surveyed were obese or overweight, and 541,000 were obese. Learn more at here.
As stated on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, about one third of US adults (33.8%) are obese. Approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese. For more details, go here.
Isn’t it more dangerous for the media to put out pictures and advertisement like they do? Shouldn’t they be forced to put a disclaimer on them so that the public is aware of it? This has made me wonder if celebrities would complain as much about paparazzi if the public could see them as they naturally are.
Therefore, I do believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but with the disclaimer that the public perception is always trying to be dissuade by the media so that we see what they want us too.

Selena Gomez is in good physical shape, she is not skinny or malnourished.
I didn't know she was in the hospital but if she was she has healed.
If people would live their own lives instead of letting society and their friends live it for them, it would help.
Nice hub thanks for sharing it with us
Nicely written hub. However, I don't take kindly to the use of statistics that are offered by any agency in America. Why? Because the statistics are not accurate and cannot be accurate. It can only be assumption based. Manipulated to distract citizens from greater/deeper problems in America. If you're curious, the number of homeless people in America has been argued that there is not sure measurement of how many actually exist. This would automatically make any and all statistics with regards to Americans(people who are true citizens) meaningless.
However, to touch on the topic of your hub- beauty is in the eye of the beholder, because it's never been understood to begin with. The beauty of a person isn't and doesn't have to do with their looks only. And, those who make the claim that it does, doesn't understand the true meaning or application of beauty. Each person's perspective is based on their knowledge and wisdom(discerned truth) and not everyone uses their perspective properly. It usually has a flaw and that flaw is their own ego. Nice hub though. :)

Cagsil, I agree it is very hard to get real stats on anything. I'm glad you like the hub.
manthy, Selena Gomez was recently in the hospital it was in the news. I wasn't saying that she wasn't in good physical shape at all. I was trying to express that kid's today don't have to be toothpicked or malnutritioned that their perceptions are just what they see on television.
